Two methods, different questions
Ultrasonic Testing (UT) uses ultrasonic sound to examine specified regions for discontinuities under an agreed procedure. Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is used to examine accessible surfaces of suitable ferromagnetic components for relevant surface and near-surface indications. They serve different inspection purposes and neither replaces the other by default.
Put scope on the drawing or order
For railway wheels
For railway wheels, identify the regions requiring examination, product condition, timing relative to machining or heat treatment, inspection procedure and reporting requirements. Whether UT, MT or both are needed depends on the wheel specification and contract.
For railway axles
For railway axles, define the axle zones requiring inspection, including any journal, seat or transition regions specified by the design authority. Access, surface condition and production stage can affect the agreed examination plan.
Questions to resolve before manufacturing
- Which product, surfaces and volumes require examination?
- Which procedure and acceptance criteria govern the inspection?
- At what manufacturing stage will inspection occur?
- What traceability, reports and customer witness points are required?
- How will indications be evaluated and dispositioned against the agreed criteria?
