Confirm the inspection basis first
A railway wheelset is an assembled product. Checking wheel and axle parts separately does not replace verification of the completed assembly. Begin with the approved wheelset drawing, component drawings, relevant specification, revision and agreed acceptance criteria.
Before assembly
Components and records
Check railway wheel and railway axle identification against the order, material documentation and specified inspection records. Review wheel profile, axle journals, wheel seats and bearing seats where required. Any UT, MT, hardness or mechanical-property requirements should be tied to the relevant component specification rather than applied automatically to every wheelset.
Assembly preparation
Confirm mating dimensions and surface condition before assembly. Agree how press-fit or assembly parameters will be controlled and recorded if the project requires them.
Inspect the completed wheelset
- Measure the specified overall dimensions, gauge-related dimensions and back-to-back distance using the drawing's measurement convention.
- Verify wheel position, wheel profile and required assembly interfaces.
- Review traceability and assembly records, marking and visible surface condition.
- Check final packing, quantity and documentation before shipment.
Measurement points, tolerances and acceptance limits must come from the approved drawing or applicable standard. Do not assume one back-to-back dimension applies across different vehicles or gauges.
